A great place for many people looking to live in Dorchester is The Baker Square complex. Most people call the complex the Baker Chocolate Factory. There are several buildings that make up the old Baker Chocolate Factory.

The Baker Square Condo Complex is made up of two seperate buildings. These are the Park Mill and the Forbes Mill.

The  buildings that make up the condos were once a thriving chocolate factory in Dorchester's Lower Mills. The buildings were part of the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory. 

The following is an excerpt from Wikipedia on the History of The Walter Baker Chocolate Factory.

In 1765, John Hannon (or alternatively spelled "Hannan" in some sources) and the American physician Dr. James Baker started importing beans and producing chocolate in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester, Massachusetts.^[1]

After Hannon's death, his widow sold the company to Dr. Baker in 1780, and the company was renamed to the Baker Chocolate Company. His first product was a cake of chocolate for making a sweetened chocolate drink. Distribution was mainly in the Northeastern United States until 1804, when Dr. Baker's son, Edmund Baker, inherited the family business and increased production with a state-of-the-art mill.

 

 

How did the Baker Chocolate Factory mills get turned into Loft Style Condos?

They eventually sold the company to the Postum Cereal Company, later known as General Foods. In 1969, production of Baker's Chocolate moved from Dorchester, Massachusetts to Dover, Delaware. The company was passed onto Kraft Foods in 1989 when they acquired General Foods.  The buildings sat vacant for a number of years and in 1989 they were converted into condos.

People also have access to the Redline trolley which takes them from the Milton Lower Mills stop  shuttle which will get them from the complex to the Ashmont Station  Redline Station making your commute to Boston a cinch.
